25th anniversary of Institute of Computer Science at University of Rostock

In September 2009, the Institute of Computer Science of Rostock University celebrated its 25th anniversary and thereby the 40th year of computer graphics in town.The anniversary week from September 21st – 25th was accompanied by several possibilities for professors, students and guests to explore the long history of computer graphics in Rostock, which started in 1969.

During the ceremonial act Prof. Dr. Heidrun Schumann from the chair of computer graphics at Rostock University reflects on the rapid development of “images which conquered the computer”. Memory and future perspectives – arivis, too, had several reasons for supporting the festivities actively.

The cooperation of arivis and Rostock University, in particular with the chair of Prof. Dr. Schumann, has a long tradition. Christian Götze, mathematician and founder of arivis, wrote his thesis here, and several members of the arivis staff studied mathematics or computer sciences in Rostock as well or are still working on their Ph.D.

Since arivis has been founded, we’ve been placing emphasis on intensive cooperation with both the University of Rostock and also the domain of “Usuability and Assistive Technologies” from the Frauenhofer Institute of Computer Graphics Research (IGD), directed by Dr. Jörg Voßkamp.

In close collaboration with the University of Rostock and its research partners (e.g. concerning diploma thesis, practical training, in particular in terms of the GO-3D network and MARIKA project of LFS Mobile Assistenzsysteme, a strong basis for a successful and long-lasting development has been created – for more then 40 years by now.
